Plein Air in Albemarle County, VA

Albemarle County, VA is a beautiful place any time of the year, but October has to be my very favorite. The trees, and consequently, the mountains turn all the colors of the rainbow--a feast for any painter!

This past weekend the Miller School, a sprawling acreage at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains in Albemarle County hosted a Plein Air Event, which I attended. I painted at the top of a hill overlooking a beautiful golden and rose colored meadow -of course with the Blue Ridge mountains as the backdrop!

"Guarding the Vinyard". 24" x 30" Oil on Canvas

For this second painting of Virginia vineyards, I chose to work with a different palette. I was reading about the Hudson River School landscape painters, and decided to give the palette they often used a try. This is burnt sienna, Venetian Red, yellow ochre, Naples yellow, ultramarine blue, burnt umber, flake white, and lamp black.

"From the Boat" -- 9" x 12" Painting From Our Boat!

Since we have a boat on the lake we live near, and my husband wanted some "company" fishing, I decided to see what it would be like to paint a plein air painting while he fished! I have to say first off that it was fun and relaxing, but also quite a challenge. Of course, the boat kept floating into different directions, but I'd adjust and keep going.

I worked on a couple of small paintings and came home with a painting of the scene that was in front if me--but needing some adjustments, which I made in the studio.

I'd definitely like to get good at this--painting from the boat, and will try again.

8" x 8" oil Painting on the Beach

Another Plein Air painting that I did this morning on the beach. After painting this, I conquered my fears and went out onto the ocean in the kayak. Pretty awesome!

8" x 10"--Painting From the Sand

This morning I painted this from the sand down closer to the water instead of staying on the porch. A whole lot of fun for a person who, everything she looks at, is envisioned as a painting! I can't remember when I started looking at life around me like this, but I do. Anyway, I hope I get another chance to do it again.

Cloudy Morning Near the Ocean

I painted this on a cloudy morning using just my pallette knife. I really like the freedom this gives me--no brushes to clean!

Summertime In the Vineyard

A few weeks ago we went exploring the surrounding counties for local vineyards, and boy did we ever find them!  The state of Virginia is getting to be more and more known for its vineyards and delicious wines.  Two that are really close to my home are Donad Trump's vineyard and Dave Matthew's --both beautiful pieces of property, as you might expect!

Anyway, this painting is of the Trump Vineyard, which has a beautiful creek/river running through it. Since it's summer, the painting ended up with alot of green in it, so that was a challenge making them look different. I did the entire painting with Aliz. Crimson, Cad. Yellow Light, Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Ochre, and White.

Plein Air painting of a Hydrangea Bush 5" x 7" Oil on Panel

Today I set my easel up in front of a couple of Hydrangea bushes in my yard. Instead of trying to paint the whole bush, I concentrated on a "piece" of it. The pallette that I used was Cobalt Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cad Yellow Light, Terra Verte, and Tit. White.

They're not the typical type of blossom. In fact, besides my yard, I've never seen this kind of Hydrangea blossom before, with the tight center blue buds and the larger white blossoms sitting around the blue. I remember when we bought it, I was a bit disappointed that we got the "wrong" type by mistake. Not any more though. They're quite pretty--and fun to paint.

Plein Air Study of my Lavender Garden

Sat out in my garden again today to paint this one. There are so many different flowers blooming now, I have a hard time deciding which to paint at the present moment. These were grouped together in a nice way--so away I went!

Working on my drawing skills with the book "Drawing Course" of Charles Bargue . . .

I've starting reading and practicing my drawing skills with this book recently. Like most artists, I often feel as if my drawing could be improved. The book is described as...

"a complete reprint of the fabled but rare Drawing Course of Charles Bargue and Jean-Leon Gerome, published in Paris in the 1860s and 1870s. For the most of the next half-century, this set of nearly 200 masterful lithographs was copied by art students worldwide before they attempted to draw from a live model. This book will be valuable to a wide range of artists, students, art historians and collectors, even as it introduces them to the hitherto-neglected master, Charles Bargue."

Sounded good to me! The lithographs really are beautiful, even if you don't try and draw from them, they're great to look at! So, I'll be spending some time drawing these reprints, and see if I can improve a bit.

Finished my "Phlox Field" Painting

I've been having a difficult time finishing this painting because I've been spending more time doing Plein Air work. My flowers are bursting out everywhere, and all I want to do is paint them. So, I've been working on this in my studio on the rainy or colder days--and there hasn't been too many of those.

Iris Time in the Garden

One of my favorite times of year in my garden is when the Iris start blooming, and here in Virginia that time is now! Like other Spring flowers, they don't last very long, but long enough to get my painting of them. Below is this seasons...

Started a Larger Painting - "Phlox Field" -24" x 30"

"Phlox Field"
24" x 30"
Oil on canvas

I decided to start another larger painting today of a field we came across that had this winding creek with the bright pink Phlox growing along its edges, leading up to an old lonely barn.

Today I worked at getting the composition down, along with the value shapes and overall tones of the different areas. I've decided to use Cobalt Blue instead of my usual Ultramarine, along with Terre Verte, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Medium and Light and Burnt Umber. Just the beginning, but a pretty decent start.

This was the second painting I finished in the tulips. The first one I didn't particularly like, so I tried again--with a better outcome. Maybe it's the addition of the bunny garden sculpture:-)

Sat in my garden among the Phlox so I could get "up close and personal" with these! The bush above them was covered with a strong smelling bud which the bees were swarming to. I didn't get stung, and I had a good time painting it all.

Starting a Series of Small Paintings

#1 "Spring Daffodils"

5" x 5"
Oil on Linen Board

This is the first in a "series" that I'm going to paint of small "daily" paintings of the different varieties of flowers I have growing around my yard. Planting and growing flowers is my second favorite activity, second only to painting! I envision ten to fifteen, 5" x 5"--but I don't really even know how many different varieties I have, or when I might tire of painting them.

I will post these on my website, http://www.barbarasryan.com for $75.00 each.

Just off my Easel--"Blue Ridge Country Pond"

"Blue Ridge Country Pond"
24" x 30" -- Oil on Canvas

This painting is larger than my past paintings have been and I really liked moving up in size! It's a fairly "typical" scene you would see traveling the back roads near my home. I say typical, but the landscape around here is actually prettier than typical--the purple/blue mountains as a backdrop really adds to the beauty. When a reflection in water is added, this is what you get!

My Last Critique from Kevin Macpherson

"You have been holding back this year, saving all your best work for the end. The colors are very beautiful and I just love those shadows on the rocks." (from my last critique by Kevin!)

Today marks my last critique from the ProDJ Program with Kevin Macpherson.  The comment he made that I pasted above made my day.  And no, I was not holding back all year AT ALL.  But, I have grown and become a better painter because of his critiques and assignments, which, I guess, is what he actually is commenting on.

At times, this was a very difficult program for me to keep up with.  Probably the most difficult, personally, was getting ALL of the work done and on time.  This was one of the main reasons for starting the program in the first place, to get me to paint on a more "regular" basis, which it did.  The other more obvious reason, was to become what I believe to be a better painter.  I do believe this also occurred.  Not only because of what Kevin told me, but because I like my paintings more:~)  Not ALL of them, but more than before.

So, now that I'm not tied to the monthly assignments, I'm hopeing to continue to be as prolific a painter.  But, I also want to paint on a larger scale again, which means more time spent on each one.  And in contrast to this, I want to work more on even smaller, "daily" paintings and concentrating on different pallettes and uses of color and light!  So, I've got alot of directions to go in -- which, in the end, doesn't really matter -- as long as I continue to paint and become the painter I long to be.

"Cascading" - Waterfall in South West Virginia

"Cascading"

This waterfall is located West of Blacksburg, VA deep in the mountains. Of course, it's a vigorous hike up to it, but well worth the effort! The electricity in the air from the rushing of the water, felt even before you reach the falls, is euphoric --everyone radiating huge smiles of happiness...

Check List For Making Great Paintings

This will be my last month of working with Kevin Macpherson in his ProDJ Program :~(

For part of our final assignment he has asked us to make a check list that we could use from now on, while making our paintings, to keep in mind the important aspects of what makes a good painting.  Below is the list that I have put together of some of what he has brought to our attention and tried to ingrain in our painting process -- things I hope to never forget!

CHECK LIST FOR MAKING GREAT PAINTINGS!!!

Is there a good “abstract” Idea underlying the Picture?

A controlling idea that will govern the choices I have to make.  Which feelings stirred me in the first and gave rise to the feelings I need to express. . .This picture is about?

Is there a color strategy used to create harmony?  Which color palette will bring the most harmony to my idea?

Does the painting have a definite focus?

Paint with my eye on the center of interest.

Does the painting “Read” –is there a route that can be followed to the center of interest?

Are the Dominant Shapes as strong and simple as possible?

Have I drawn thumbnail sketches of my idea dividing the space into various arrangements of value – Black, White and Gray value arrangements—dividing the space into 3, 4, 5, 6. . shapes to see what works best?

Have I organized the painting in terms of clearly stated shapes that are dissimilar with some variety and gradation using subtle changes within each shape?

Is the subject effectively lit without too many light sources –reduce the subject to three planes, light plane, middle tone plane, shadow plane?

Have I created an unequal proportion of light and shade keeping my light family of colors separate from my shadow family?

Do the lights have a continuous flow?  – the picture as a whole should have a sense of orchestration from either dark to light or light to dark – using gradated lights or gradations with an increasing and decreasing intensity.

Do the shadow shapes describe the form?

It should echo the shape of the object—reinforcing the overall shape of the object. Let  the shadow effectively describe the direction of the light.

Have I used foreground material to deepen the space – magnifying the depth of field?

Does the background recede far enough? – Less color, less visible texture.

Is there an alternating pattern of hard and soft edges?

No edge along a form should continue for very long to be either hard or soft.

Beginning edges are hard, turning edges are soft.

Hard and soft, lost and found, stop and flow

Is there enough variation in the textures of the paint?

The brighter the light the thicker the paint.

Dark shadowy areas use smooth, flat paint.
